Our Story and Values
Creating a genuine home environment where older adults can live with dignity, companionship, and gentle attention.
Return HomeAbout Baan Sabai
Baan Sabai began with a simple observation: many older adults in Northern Thailand were looking for living arrangements that felt less like institutions and more like genuine homes. They wanted to maintain their independence while enjoying the comfort of companionship and thoughtful support. This understanding became the foundation for everything we do.
Established in early 2018, we started in a quiet residential area of San Kamphaeng, just outside Chiang Mai city center. The location was chosen deliberately for its peaceful surroundings, garden spaces, and proximity to local markets and community life. The neighborhood feels residential rather than commercial, which aligns with our approach to creating a home environment.
Our mission centers on providing comfortable living arrangements that honor each person's preferences and rhythms. We recognize that everyone comes with their own history, habits, and ways of finding meaning in daily life. Rather than imposing a rigid schedule, we create flexible routines that allow for both structure and spontaneity.
The physical setting plays an important role. Our facilities feature common areas for shared meals and activities, private rooms that offer personal space, and outdoor gardens where residents can walk, sit, or tend to plants if they wish. Natural light, fresh air, and views of greenery are considered essential rather than optional.
We value genuine community over programmed socialization. Mealtimes are shared around a common table where conversation flows naturally. Activities emerge from the interests of residents themselves, whether that involves cooking together, working on crafts, discussing current events, or simply enjoying quiet time with tea and books. Staff members participate alongside residents rather than directing from a distance.
Our approach to meals reflects this same philosophy. Food is prepared fresh each day using ingredients from local markets. Menus consider both nutritional needs and personal preferences, with room for variation and special requests. Eating together becomes an anchor point of daily life, offering structure without rigidity.

Our Standards and Approach
We maintain thoughtful protocols that balance safety with comfort, privacy with community, and structure with flexibility.
Safety Considerations
Facilities are designed with accessibility in mind, including well-lit pathways, handrails where helpful, and layouts that reduce fall risks while maintaining an unhurried, residential feel.
Privacy and Dignity
Personal information remains confidential. Residents have private spaces for rest and reflection. Assistance with personal care is offered with discretion and respect for individual preferences.
Staff Training
Team members receive ongoing training in companion care approaches, communication techniques for working with older adults, and understanding of age-related changes that affect daily life.
Wellness Focus
Daily routines encourage gentle physical activity, social interaction, cognitive engagement, and nutritious eating. We support connections with healthcare providers as needed, while not providing medical services ourselves.
Family Partnership
We view families as partners in supporting their loved ones. Regular communication is maintained, visits are welcomed, and family input is valued in decisions affecting daily life and comfort.
Home Environment
Settings are designed to feel residential rather than institutional. Comfortable furniture, personal touches, natural materials, and quiet spaces contribute to an atmosphere of home rather than facility.
Our Values in Practice
Respect for Individual Choice
We recognize that each person has developed their own preferences over a lifetime. Some people prefer solitary morning time with coffee and reading. Others enjoy starting the day with conversation. Some participate eagerly in group activities while others prefer quieter pursuits. These differences are honored rather than smoothed over in the name of programmatic consistency.
Meaningful Daily Life
Activities are chosen for their genuine interest rather than their therapeutic label. Cooking together happens because people enjoy preparing food and sharing meals, not because it counts as occupational therapy. Garden work happens because tending plants brings satisfaction, not because it fulfills an activity quota. The meaning comes from the activity itself, not from its categorization.
Connection to Community
Baan Sabai maintains ties to the wider San Kamphaeng community. Residents might visit the local morning market, attend temple events during festivals, or participate in neighborhood activities when interested. These connections help maintain a sense of participation in ordinary life rather than separation from it.
Transparency and Communication
Families receive regular updates about their loved ones, not through formal reports but through genuine conversation. Changes in appetite, sleep patterns, mood, or interests are discussed openly so families can stay connected to the rhythms of daily life. Concerns are addressed promptly rather than minimized or postponed.
